How to grow your podcast today - 5 steps
There is no secret formula for a successful podcast. Aside from your definition of success, there have been podcasts that find several different avenues for growth. However, there are a few trends we’ve seen that are consistent with each other that only help build up an audience.
Below are the 5 steps to grow your podcast today:
Passion.
Value.
Consistency.
Quality.
Time.
Passion.
If you are not passionate or knowledgeable about what you’re podcasting about, listeners will pick that up. If you are authentic and excited about it, your audience will be excited about it.
Value.
Your audience is not tuning in to only listening to your passion and knowledge, what VALUE are they getting? Why should they listen to you every week? What are you providing them? How can they grow as a person, and make their lives better, along with the lives around them better by listening to you? What is the value you are providing to your audience?
Consistency.
Consistency engages listeners. You’ve “hooked” your listeners with your passion and knowledge about your topic, you are giving a value to them they find nowhere else, and now your audience expects a consistent flow of content.
The more breaks in scheduled episodes, the more an audience will find something else to fill their time with. This comes back to passion. Consistency can be very difficult if there is no passion. If passion fizzles out, so will the audience.
Quality.
There have been times we all have been at some live event, and for some reason there was massive feedback from the microphone and speakers. Aside from the clinching of ears and the “AAAH”s, I’ve noticed (as a sound guy myself) that most people looking at the sound guy behind the sound desk and subconsciously telling him to do his job better.
You are doing your job right as a sound guy if no one knows you’re there. How can no one know you're there? By not having any distractions away from the content being delivered. From too many “ums” to inconsistent volumes, to harsh sounding EQ, there are a lot of things to think about, but simply put: Don’t compare your quality to other pod’s quality, make yours consistent on its own and eliminate audio distractions.
Time.
Everyone that has dabbled or makes a living from podcasting has at some point wished there was a switch to flip…there isn’t. There is no fast way to be successful, anyone telling you otherwise just wants your money (don’t look at the title of this article). It will take time, perhaps even more than you initially think to grow your podcast to the heights you believe it deserves. There is nothing wrong with that. That’s where all these other parts come into play in tandem with time.
Passion and Knowledge provide the ‘gas’. Giving authentic value to your audience will help put the vehicle in drive. Consistency keeps people in your vehicle. Quality provides a ‘smooth ride’, and yes, it takes time for all these parts to build your audience.
